Physical Education

Physical Education (PE) is highly valued at Seaton Primary with each class receiving a minimum of two hours of physical education a week. We know that through PE and sport children learn and build their character and resilience. It is through physical education that children learn the importance of resilience and that the more they practice, the more they improve. At Seaton, we encourage our children to focus on their personal best alongside developing the multi-ability cogs and healthy competition.

Our PE curriculum uses the Real Legacy approach to embed fundamental physical skills (FUNS) as well as learning behaviours (multi-ability cogs) that can be applied in all aspects of learning. At Seaton, we believe that physical education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is vital and unique in its contribution to a pupil’s physical and emotional development and health. PE is the building blocks for creating a positive relationship with physical activity for life so it is imperative that children enjoy PE. The physical education curriculum aims to provide for pupils’ increasing self- confidence through an ability to manage themselves successfully in a variety of situations. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities aims to cater for individual pupil’s needs and abilities. It is important that the children understand where they are and how to improve and that all children feel supported and challenged to enable them to succeed.

PE Curriculum Implementation

We implement the Real PE approach across the school, which incorporates Real Gym, Real Dance, Real Play and Real Leaders. This approach is based on progressive learning objectives which, combined with varied and flexible teaching styles, endeavour to provide appropriate, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning situations for all pupils. Real Legacy aims to promote an understanding of the many benefits of exercise, through a balanced range of relevant activities. Physical education is considered as a vehicle to facilitate developing the whole child through the multi-ability cogs (personal, social, creative, cognitive, physical, health and fitness) which are skills that can be applied in all subjects rather than exclusively with the acquisition of motor skills and techniques. Real PE is fully aligned to the new National Curriculum and Ofsted requirements and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination, healthy competition and cooperative learning through a unique and market leading approach to teaching and learning.

Jasmine online helps teachers to facilitate the lessons and provides guidance and CPD to ensure they can provide support and challenge for all. This platform also provides consistency in approach across the school, clear learning outcomes and different levels of challenge. Teachers are supported in their pedagogy through the Learning Nutritional framework which enables them to evaluate the teaching and learning and provides support on how to best implement the approach.
