Year 2

Welcome to Year 2 at Seaton Primary School. Learning and adventure await!

We are incredibly excited to offer our Explicit Learning and Rich Play Model; a curriculum programme in which children not only learn, but learn how to learn and are enabled to shape their own learning experiences through dedicated time to play.

Our want is for learners to feel empowered; to forge their own interests, get creative and to dream big. To do this, we build a 'love for learning' culture in which children develop the meta-cognitive skills underpinning learning success now...and for life. We then facilitate rich, planned opportunities for children to apply these skills through play and enquiry.

Reading continues to form the backbone of our curriculum. We continue to teach the Read Write Inc phonics scheme, with the target of all our children progressing onto a rich programme of reading comprehension; deepening fluency, prosody and a lasting love for reading.

Our English curriculum is structured through immersion into a succession of rich texts which demonstrate key linguistic and literary knowledge. In year 2, we begin to truly express ourselves as writers and apply the knowledge we have learnt through reading, thinking deeply about the choices writers make in order to make their work stand out from the crowd.

Our ‘Power Maths’ adventure continues. We deepen our understanding of number to one hundred and beyond, whilst continuing to explore shape and measure, all the while consolidating our rich faculty for mathematical language and vocabulary. The place value number system is the cornerstone of our enquiry, as we utilise this knowledge to pattern find and problem solve, whilst grasping every opportunity to test our ideas and demonstrate our creativity through our cherished maths journaling opportunities.

In the wider curriculum, we further our appetite for learning through rich academic and cultural experience. We also aspire to ‘live’ our school values of being kind, respectful, truthful and responsible each day through our words, our actions; our compassion for each other and through the fact that, in year two, we always strive to be the best we can be!
