What makes our school more than just a school?

Every school has classrooms, teachers and lessons, yet Seaton Primary School goes far beyond that. Alongside the strong academic foundations built for every child, we provide experiences, opportunities and traditions that help our children grow in confidence, feel a true sense of belonging, celebrate our locality and build a broad understanding of the world. At Seaton Primary School, we create memories for our children that last long after they leave.

Extensive Educational Visits: Taking Learning Further

From our local coastline to world-famous landmarks, learning doesn't stop at the school gate.

One of the things that makes Seaton Primary special is the breadth, frequency and ambition of our educational visits programme.

We believe that children remember learning best when they can experience it for themselves. That's why we invest heavily in providing opportunities for children to see, hear and explore the subjects they are learning about, both locally and further afield.

Throughout their time at Seaton, children take part in a wide range of visits, workshops and experiences that enrich the curriculum and help them connect their learning to the real world. From exploring our local community and Jurassic Coast to visiting nationally significant historical sites, museums and cultural attractions, our children benefit from experiences that go well beyond the classroom.

Beyond the Classroom

The breadth, frequency and ambition of our trips programme means that educational visits are not occasional extras—they are a valued part of school life.

Some of our curriculum-linked visits include:

  • Bringing Science to life at The Sealife Centre in Weymouth.
  • Visiting Stonehenge to explore prehistoric Britain first-hand.
  • Exploring the Roman Baths in Bath as part of their study of the Roman Empire.
  • Investigating science, engineering and innovation at We The Curious, Bristol.

  • Outdoor learning and environmental projects

  • Theatre visits and performances
  • STEM days and a Science fair

Experiences That Stay With Children

When our children look back on their primary school years, they often remember the places they visited, the discoveries they made and the experiences they shared with their friends.

Whether standing amongst the stones at Stonehenge, stepping back into Roman Britain in Bath or exploring the coastline on our doorstep, these experiences help children build confidence, deepen their understanding and develop a sense of curiosity about the wider world.

For us, educational visits are not simply school trips. They are an important part of the rich and varied experiences we provide for every child. The breadth, frequency and ambition of our programme helps ensure that children leave Seaton with a wealth of knowledge, memorable experiences and stories to tell.

On-Site Swimming Pool & Water Safety Education

From first splashes to lifelong skills - swimming is at the heart of life at Seaton Primary School.

One of the things that makes Seaton Primary truly unique is our on-site swimming pool and dedicated school swimming instructor.

As a coastal school, we passionate that learning to swim is about much more than meeting a curriculum requirement. It is a life skill that helps children stay safe, build confidence and enjoy everything our beautiful seaside location has to offer.

Having our own pool means that children can access swimming regularly throughout their time with us, developing confidence in the water from an early age and building skills year after year.

A Swimming Journey Through Seaton Primary

Children begin their journey in our pool from their very first year at school. In Early Years, they enjoy water confidence sessions and fun splash experiences that help them feel comfortable and secure in the water.

As they move through Years 1, 2 and 3, children take part in dedicated blocks of swimming lessons each year, alongside enjoyable recognition sessions that celebrate the progress they have made.

In Years 4, 5 and 6, swimming becomes an even greater focus. Children benefit from two full terms of swimming lessons, together with additional top-up sessions where needed, helping every child to develop their technique, stamina and confidence.

Our aim is simple: for every child to leave Seaton Primary as a confident swimmer with a strong understanding of water safety and the knowledge they need to enjoy the coast safely and responsibly.

For many children, some of their happiest memories of primary school are made in our pool – learning a new skill, achieving a personal goal, cheering on friends at the swimming gala or simply enjoying being active in the water.

Forest School & Woodland Learning

A woodland where children can be active, adventurous, explore, play and take supported risks.

One of the most distinctive features of Seaton Primary School is our mature on-site woodland. Tucked away within our school grounds, it provides children with a special place to learn, explore and connect with the natural world throughout the year.

While many schools offer occasional Forest School experiences, our woodland is woven into the life of the school. Children return to it again and again as they grow, building new skills, confidence and knowledge at each stage of their journey.

Our Forest School programme is led by Chris Holland, a highly experienced Forest School Leader, nature educator and author who has been inspiring children to learn outdoors for over 20 years. Through his expertise, children experience high-quality outdoor learning that is purposeful, engaging and full of opportunities for discovery.

The WILD Passport Curriculum

Children taking part in Forest School follow the WILD Passport, a progressive outdoor learning curriculum that helps them develop practical skills and become increasingly confident, capable and independent learners.

Through their woodland experiences, children learn to:

  • Care for themselvesSeatonPrimarySchool12012023_RobCoombe-190.jpg
  • Care for others
  • Care for the Earth
  • Develop practical outdoor skills
  • Work collaboratively
  • Build resilience and perseverance
  • Understand and appreciate the natural world around them

Forest School also helps children continue to develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning introduced in the Early Years Foundation Stage, encouraging them to be active, curious, creative and willing to explore.

A Woodland Journey Through Seaton Primary

Our youngest children benefit from the greatest frequency of access to the woodland.

  • Reception and Year 1 children take part in weekly Forest School sessions throughout the year.
  • Children in Years 2 to 6 take part in dedicated blocks of Forest School learning.
  • An extra-curricular Forest School club which runs multiple days a week and provides even more opportunities for children to enjoy learning outdoors.
  • Lunchtime forest school provision

The breadth, frequency and expertise that underpin our Forest School provision make it a valued and memorable part of school life.

More Than Forest School

What makes our woodland so special is that it is much more than a place for Forest School lessons.

It regularly becomes an outdoor classroom where children write stories beneath the trees, investigate habitats, create artwork inspired by nature, tackle practical mathematical challenges and explore environmental issues first-hand.

Because children return to the woodland regularly, learning feels active, exploratory and hands-on. The woodland provides opportunities to climb, build, investigate, observe, collaborate, create and solve problems in meaningful, real-life contexts.

A Magical Place to Learn

Ask our children about the woods and many will describe them as a "magical place".

It is where dens are built, campfires are shared, wildlife is discovered and friendships grow. It is a place where children challenge themselves, learn new skills and experience the joy of being outdoors in every season.

As children move through the school, they return to the woodland time and time again, making new discoveries as they grow older and more capable. For many, it becomes one of the places they remember most fondly about their time at Seaton Primary School.

Curriculum Community Projects

Every child can make a difference. Every project helps them realise it.

One of the things that makes Seaton Primary School unique is our Curriculum Community Projects.

Every year group plans, leads and delivers a project linked to their learning. These projects give children the opportunity to share their learning beyond the classroom and celebrate the community we are proud to be part of.

At the heart of every project is a simple belief: every small action makes a difference, and one person can make a difference.

Projects with a Purpose

Examples include:

  • Beach School & Community Exhibition
  • Family & Community Pop-Up Café
  • Active Citizen Beach Clean
  • Year 6 Seaton Heritage Trail

Our projects are rooted in Seaton's coastline, heritage, environment and community. They help children develop a sense of pride in where they live and a growing understanding that communities thrive when people care, contribute and work together.

Whether welcoming visitors to an exhibition, serving customers in the café, helping care for the beach or sharing the stories of our town, children see that their learning can have a positive impact beyond the school gates.

By the time children leave Seaton Primary School, we hope they leave with confidence, a strong sense of belonging and the knowledge that they can make a meaningful contribution to their locality and the world around them.

The Richness of Our Local Area on the Jurassic Coast

Learning from the place where we learn, grow and belong.

A strong sense of belonging sits at the heart of life at Seaton Primary School.

We are located in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and make the most of the incredible opportunities on our doorstep.  From the coastline and beaches to the Wetlands, countryside and local towns, children regularly explore the places that make this part of Devon so special.

Every year group visits Seaton Wetlands, taking part in learning sessions and active exploration. Children regularly learn on our local beach and, throughout their time at school, visit other local beaches including Beer, Branscombe and Lyme Regis.

As they grow, children become familiar with the landscapes, wildlife, history and communities around them. They learn the stories of the area, discover what makes it special and develop a strong connection to the place where they spend such an important part of their childhood.

Our bespoke geography curriculum is skilfully designed around our locality, but for us, locality is about more than geography. It is about helping children understand the community they are part of, value the environment around them and develop a sense of belonging to the place where they learn, grow and make memories.

Helping children know, value and feel connected to the place where they learn and belong.
